Helene Stapinski Launches New Book at Casa Colombo Presentation

Sunday, May 21, 2017, 4 pm

As we celebrate our heritage during National Historic Preservation Month, noted author Helene Stapinski reminds us that family and city histories can be anything but straightforward. Helene's widely acclaimed Five-Finger Discount: A Crooked Family History was set in a grittier Jersey City perhaps unfamiliar to newer arrivals.  Since that book, she has researched family lore about a great-great-grandmother who immigrated here in the late 19th century. The result of her perseverance is Murder in Matera: A True Story of Passion, Family, and Forgiveness in Southern Italy.

The Embankment Preservation Coalition is teaming up with the Italian Educational and Cultural Center for the Arts at Casa Colombo to bring you a talk and book signing by Helene. Copies of Murder in Matera will be available for puchase at the event, courtesy of WORD BOOKSTORES.

Notes on celebrating our significant institutions, buildings, districts, and structures during National Historic Preservation Month: Helene Stapinski began her writing career at The Jersey Journal, which is marking its 150th year in 2017. Casa Colombo was built by Italian immigrant craftsmen in 1936 to serve the historic Italian Village that grew up around the Pennsylvania Railroad and its Harsimus Branch. Join us for a fun evening in a historic building, in a historic area, immersing ourselves in history!
