Your comment should say something along these lines:

STB should authorize a full environmental study of the Harsimus Branch, so decisionmakers have the best information available to them.

Write whatever else you want about the environmental effects of abandonment and demolition.  Please do not delay!  STB needs to know you care how their decision-making affects you.

Demolition Hearing 2/09

HPC Votes  5-0 to Deny Demolition Permits;
Hardship Hearing Begins

April 1.  The Historic Preservation Commission tonight denied Conrail and its investor partner permits to demolish the six segments of the Harsimus Branch Embankment.

After the commission voted unanimously to deny the permits, an attorney for the six LLCs to which Conrail sold the property began a presentation on applications for hardship exemptions.  For lack of time, the hardship presentation was carried over to another hearing.

Thank you to our steadfast supporters, who showed up in the rain for yet another hearing.  Save the Date for the next one:  Tuesday, April 14.  NOTE:  This meeting will be held in the 14th Floor Conference Room of 30 Montgomery Street.
Open Space Leads the Questions at Mayoral Candidate Forum April 2

April 2.  All five candidates for Mayor participated in a forum at the Christa McAuliffe School (PS 28), Jersey City Heights.  The forum was sponsored by a number of organizations in The Heights, aptly named The Heights Coalition.

Open space was a hot topic, leading the questions for the candidates, and several mentioned support for the Embankment although it is not in the Heights.

Candidates include current Mayor Jerramiah Healy, businessman and Civic JC founder Daniel Levin, NJ Assemblyman L. Harvey Smith, former Assemblyman and former Freeholder Louis Manzo, and Jersey City detective Phillip G. Webb. Mr. Webb indicated in comments after the forum that he supported Embankment preservation; the other four candidates were all previously on the record for Embankment preservation.
