Coalition Steps
Up Statewide Efforts for Urban Open
Space/Historic
Preservation Partnership Focuses on
Urban Open Space
April 14. Embankment Coalition
representatives joined other advocates for urban open
space in a New Jersey Harbor Estuary Land
Partnership (NJHELP) summit that covered current urban
conservation policies, acquisition funding, site
remediation policy, and natural resources
damages. The summit was called by NY/NJ Baykeeper.
NJHELP will be working for a formula for Green
Acres funding that recognizes the extraordinary open
space needs of city dwellers and the special issues of
land prices and contamination they face.
Preservation
NJ Summit Features Embankment
March 25. Representatives from five
New Jersey historic sites that are on, or eligible for,
the National Register of Historic Places met at the
Newark Public Library to explore ways to advance our
projects in the face of difficult economic and other
conditions.
The Embankment Preservation Coalition was
invited by Preservation NJ, the statewide
organization, which selected the sites from its "10 Most
Endangered Sites" lists of recent years.
Participants included the director of the State
Historic Preservation Office Dan Saunders and
Preservation NJ's Board President Mary-Anna Holden,
who also serves as mayor of Madison.
Land
Rally Fosters Knowledge and
Networking
March 20. Coalition reps joined
hundreds of open space advocates from all over the state
for the annual Conservation Land Rally, held
this year at Rutgers, New Brunswick, and sponsored
by the New
Jersey Conservation Foundation and other
organizations. We came back with increased
knowledge of remediation processes, habitat restoration,
and endangered and threatened species studies, which we
hope to put to work when Jersey City acquires the
Embankment. |
Commerce
Secretary Locke Marks Earth Day with Funds for Jersey
City Project
Targeted to Wetlands
Restoration and Liberty Water Gap Trail
April
22. Against the backdrop of the
Pulaski Skway, a snowy egret, a goose, ducks, and
robins assembled with other open space advocates to mark
the award of $10 million in American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act funds to the New Jersey Department
of Enviornmental Protection. The funds
will transform a dump in Lincoln Park into 35
acres of tidal saltwater wetlands and trail.
The trail is part of the Liberty-Water Gap Trail,
which connects the Statue of Liberty to the Delaware
Water Gap and, on the eastern side of Jersey
City, will use the Embankment segment of the East
Coast Greenway.
U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke said that the
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration grant
would put people to work on a project that would provide
long-term economic benefits to the
County.
