Your Local Bike Trail Needs You!

By Denise Copeland/For The Jersey Journal

November 02, 2009, 10:00AM

Somerset County Park Commission - Great trails don't just happen ... they take a lot of effort by enthusiastic volunteers.

If you want to get involved in ensuring the future of safe biking trails, whether by donating money or sweat equity, there are many local and national activist groups for trail support, maintenance & development.

And when you join, you might get a cool shirt with your tax-deduction as a bonus!

Here’s just a few ... if you know of any you'd like to make sure are added to our running list, let me know.

  • Jersey Off-Road Bicycle Association: JORBA is a group of New Jersey mountain bike riders dedicated to cycling education, advocacy and conserving New Jersey’s diverse natural resources. With chapters all over the state, they not only do great trail conservation, they are more than willing to show beginner trail riders the ropes.
  • Rails-to-Trails Conservancy: Dedicated to converting the miles and miles of unused railways throughout the United States to multi-use recreational paths.
  • American Trails: Supporting all trail users of all types, they advocate for greenways and trail preservation across the country. http://www.americantrails.org/
