| The Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy presents its Fall 2005 tours and events series. In conjunction with the release of its 2006 Jersey City Calendar, "Transportation: Past and Present," the Conservancy's fall events will highlight transportation history and landmarks in Jersey City.
#1 Sunday, November 6, 2005: BERGEN ARCHES/ERIE CUT WALK The construction of the Bergen Arches and Erie Cut is considered to be one of the most impressive feats of railroad engineering on the Eastern Seaboard. Built between 1906 and 1910, the Arches provided the Erie railroad a connection between the Jersey City waterfront and the rest of the nation. The Arches and Cut now form a vast urban forest, and have been proposed as a main route of the East Coast Greenway. This walk will also feature the 6th and 10th street Embankments, formally used by the Pennsylvania and Erie-Lackawanna Railroads, respectively. Where/When/How: Rain or shine. Please wear boots, rain gear and bring a water bottle. The tour leaves from the Pavonia-Newport Station at 10:00 a.m., and the Hamilton Park Gazebo at 10:30. Suggested donation: $10.00. Tour leader, Mike Selender. For more information contact Mr. Selender at: mike_selender@mindspring.com #2 Sunday, November 13, 2005: HUDSON-BERGEN LIGHT RAIL HISTORICAL TOUR History at 25 mph! The tour, originated by the Conservancy in 2000, will take in the northernmost stations this time around, including Essex Street, Exchange Place, Harborside, Hoboken Terminal and the newest western Hoboken and Weehawken stops. Where/When/How: Rain or shine. The tour starts at 1:00 p.m. and leaves from the Jersey Avenue light rail stop at Jersey Avenue (south of Grand Street and across the street from the new Jersey City Medical Center).
